Are you leaking confidential data?

A program on Australian television has highlighted the importance of thorough data destruction.

The report, on SBS’s Dateline, revealed that countries in the western world, including the UK and US, have been dumping up to 500 containers a month of e-waste in Ghana, including TVs, monitors and computers.

The programme revealed that many of the computers contained hard drives that still held confidential and sensitive information.  This was then used to blackmail the companies it came from.

It seems that the vast majority of firms are unaware that their e-waste is being disposed of in this manner, without undergoing data destruction first.  Even formatting a drive does not securely erase the data on it.
